Dear friends and members of the UAE,

UAE-lettera-presidente-Vienna-10-2014_webAfter a summer break following the Annual Congress of the European Lawyers’ Union in Vienna at the end of June, it is now full steam ahead once again for our association both locally and internationally. The 28th UAE Congress took place in the prestigious setting of Palais Daun-Kinsky, which is one of the most famous palaces in the imperial city of Vienna. It was masterfully organized by Michael Poduschka, who ensured that it met the traditional high standards of distinction and sophistication displayed at all of our association’s big institutional events. There was a wonderfully friendly atmosphere at the 28th Congress, which was held in Austria’s historical capital city for the first time and was a huge success. This was thanks in part to the specialist topic of “Punitive damages and collective actions in Europe” and the refined atmosphere in the venues chosen by Michael, including the legendary Hotel Sacher, which played host to the gala dinner.

We are now just days away from the annual International Conference in Marseille, which has been organized by the large Mediterranean delegation and its President Gérard Abitbol, the Dean of the Honorary Presidents of the UAE. Every year, it provides an opportunity to discuss fascinating, highly topical matters. This time, we will take a look from a number of points of view at all of the issues associated with medical liability and the dangerous phenomenon of drug counterfeiting.
Erick Campana, the President of the Marseille Bar Association, will welcome us to the city’s Maison de l’Avocat, which becomes our home for at least one day every year.

Meanwhile, the Commissions and Delegations are keeping busy on both a local and a national basis. I am pleased to announce that the Naples and Campania Delegation and its President Gian Michele Roberti are enthusiastically throwing themselves into their work. There was significant interest and local press coverage for the first official meeting of the Naples delegation, which represents the great Neapolitan legal tradition within the UAE. It was attended by the highly esteemed Prof. Giuseppe Tesauro, who is the President of the Constitutional Court of Italy and an Honorary Member of the UAE.

The second big institutional event in 2014 will take place at the end of November. The General Assembly of the European Lawyers’ Union will be held in Krakow on 28 and 29 November. An extremely interesting international conference has been organized about the protection of fundamental rights in Europe and appeals to the European Court of Human Rights. It also looks very promising on the social front, thanks to the carefully planned programme put together by the organizer Pierluigi Vasile. All of the necessary registration information has been available on our website for some time now and many people have already signed up to attend the Annual Assembly.

I look forward to seeing you all at the forthcoming events.

Best regards,
Bruno Telchini
PRESIDENT OF THE EUROPEAN LAWYERS’ UNION
